Farm of the Month: Hettie Belle Farm

By Jennifer Core, Hettie Belle Farm

Hettie Belle Farm is a local, pasture-based family farm raising 100% grass-fed and organically raised meats and poultry for Monadnock families through a meat CSA!

Located in the heart of the village of Warwick, MA on the New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts border we are raising beef cows, sheep, pigs, turkeys, chickens and ducks on pasture.  Hettie Belle Farm is a true village farm comprised of pasture-land owned and leased, as well as many generous arrangements with neighbors who see animals as a welcomed alternative to mowing high quality food stuff.

Central to our family and farm is the land we steward. Our cows and sheep are 100% grass-fed. They have as much of mama’s milk as they want, are moved through our pastures daily May to November and fed local hay throughout the winter. Our pigs are pastured in a large hedgerow where they root day and night. Our chickens, ducks and turkeys spend their entire lives on grass. The animals themselves play a central role in the continual improvement of soil fertility and the overall productivity of the farm as well as adding to the quaint New England scenery we all value.

With a deep commitment to purity of product, we only feed certified organic grain to our pigs and poultry and all of our animals are 100% antibiotic and hormone free. As parents of young children, who have been raising livestock for years, we are incredibly conscious of the food we build our bodies with. Our commitment to local, organic, 100% grass-fed is uncompromising because we believe that good meat actively contributes to a landscape, local economy and community that we want to leave for our children.

Join us and become one of our member families! Shares are comprised of a total of 60+ pounds of meat and poultry distributed over 5 monthly pick-ups (November – March) of roughly 12+ pounds each. Shares are distributed monthly at Hannah Grimes Marketplace.

Local Consuming

Two Rivers Wrap, by Rocket Boy Knits available at Lond Ridge Farm, Westmoreland

By Laura Keir, Monadnock Localvore Project

Consuming and supporting local food is extremely important for the health of our community, environment, and our bodies- but what about all of the other things we consume besides food? How “local” are those goods?

This month’s newsletter includes great examples of people and businesses within a 150 mile radius of Keene that are creating products from local ingredients. Read about Jenness Farm‘s soaps made from the milk of their own goats, Lorna’s Wool Needle Felting Kits composed of local sheep’s wool, and how to craft a wooden utensil right from the woods.

Beyond those examples, there are many more stories of goods in our region that are created from local materials. The Organic Hound in Swanzey makes organic dog treats using the following ingredients, among others: Pete & Gerry‘s eggs (Monroe, NH), The Royal Butcher beef (Braintree, VT), and Morgan’s Mills oat and rice flour (Union, ME- a bit more than 150 miles away, but still a good effort for flour!). That means that roughly 75% of their dog biscuits are made of local ingredients!

When it comes to wooden products, we have a lot of natural resources in our region. In Westmoreland, Mountain Meadow Woodworks crafts wooden boxes right from the trees on their own farm. Ox Pond Press in Bethlehem, NH prints wooden signs for the home on white pine boards that come from H.G. Wood Industries in Bath, NH; 85% of that white pine is milled from trees grown in New Hampshire, and 13% comes from Vermont.

How about jewelry? Jayelay Jewelers in Westmoreland handcrafts earrings and necklaces composed of 80% gemstones, metals, and other materials (shells, sea glass, etc.) that are found in northern New England. The Village Craftsman in Dublin makes lightweight, laser-cut earrings from local maple and cherry wood.

See the resources section at the end of this newsletter for more goods that are made from local ingredients. And the next time you are shopping, try to figure out where those products really came from- even if you don’t get all the answers to your questions right away, you will be putting this thought in people’s minds:

How can we consume more locally?

Country Critters Farm

By Julie Thibodeau, Country Critters Farm

Country Critters Farm, LLC is a small family farm that has been a part of Winchester for the past nine years, producing naturally raised meats.  This April we were licensed by the State of New Hampshire to create our own unique farmstead goat cheeses from the milk of our goats.

We offer many different flavors of fresh chevre in a variety of sizes.  In the near future we will be offering aged cheeses as well.  All of our goat cheeses are made from our own goats’ milk. Currently our fifteen goats produce fifteen gallons of milk a day! Of the twenty plus kid goats that were born recently, eleven are does which we plan to add to our milking herd, with a goal of having thirty milking goats in the future. Our goats enjoy being out on pasture and guarded by their loyal companions, Rose, Emma and Ana, three Great Pyrenees dogs.

All of our cheeses are available for purchase at our farm and at many farmers markets and retailers of local products throughout the area. In addition to a small retail area at the farm (open daily 9am to 7pm), we will be at the following farmers’ markets; Saturday Gilbo Avenue in Keene, Bedford on Tuesday, Peterborough and Derry on alternating Wednesdays, Cheshire Medical Center every Thursday (alternating between Claremont and Amherst) and then on Fridays we will alternate between Weare and Newport. For updates on farm happenings follow our Facebook page, or feel free to email or give us a call.

No two cheeses are alike; each cheese is special to the area it is made in.  We hope you stop by for a visit and try our cheese!
