photo (12)      CGC Co-Coordinator Michael Hightower had a very successful, free cooking series this fall in partnership with the CGC and the Cheshire Country Conservation District. His grand finale was a pie making class. Community members came together to learn how to homemade crusts and different kinds of pies. They swapped tips and left with bellies full of pie plus 2 crusts to take home. Can’t beat that! Stay tuned for more classes this spring or summer.

Harper Acres ended the season with a potluck. Gardeners shared food and talked about the successes of the season.  They already started planning for next year.  Good work everyone!

The Woodward Home, through a generous Home Depot donation, is having a ramp built down to the garden beds. This will make the gardens more accessible for the senior residents who enjoy them.

August is New Hampshire Eat Local Month – the perfect time to shine a light on local food, farms and our entire Monadnock Region local food system.

First let’s take a quick step back and define what a local food system.  Think of it as all the pieces needed to bring local food from the farm to your plate: the soil, farm labor, transportation to distribute these goods to markets, and the list continues.  These pieces come together to form our local food system.

How does a healthy local food system bolster our local economy?  While there aren’t yet comprehensive studies for the Monadnock Region, there are impressive findings from other states that quantify farms’ effects on local economies.

The Monadnock Food Co-op plans its opening day of business as Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11 a.m.

Please keep in mind that this date could shift due to construction schedule changes. So check back with us regularly and make sure you’re on our E-Updates list.

Regular store hours are Monday – Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.  A Grand Opening Celebration is slated for June.

This opening is the culmination of many volunteer hours, community support and member investment since early 2008.  Over 1,200 Greater Keene citizens prioritized a food co-op as a top priority in the City of Keene Comprehensive Master Plan and close to 1,200 families have joined the Monadnock Food Co-op as Member-Owners, contributing over $100,000 in Member Equity and $800,000 in Member Loans to this start-up community owned business.
