Monadnock Food Co-op Hosts Ice Cream Social Fundraiser

The Monadnock Food Co-op and Walpole Creamery will host an Ice Cream Social Fundraiser on Saturday, June 22, 2019, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. to benefit the Monadnock Localvores Jeffrey P. Smith Farm Camp Scholarship Program that offers financial support to local youth to attend agricultural camps each summer. The fundraiser takes place at the co-op’s outdoor patio at 34 Cypress Street, Keene.

“Our Ice Cream Social Fundraiser is a great opportunity to celebrate the end of the school year and the start of summer while supporting a local cause — not to mention eating some delicious ice cream with the best spread of toppings you’ve ever seen,” said General Manager Michael Faber.

The suggested donation for ice cream and toppings is $5. Dairy-free options will also be available, along with a scrumptious range of toppings donated by co-op vendors. Singer-Songwriters Pat Clark and Jentri Jollimore will provide live music in the amphitheater and event attendees are welcome to bring a blanket and relax on the lawn. The Monadnock Waldorf School will offer face painting, too.

The Co-op hosts this fundraising event to support nonprofits and community initiatives that further Monadnock Food Co-op’s goals of increasing access to healthy food, connecting community, strengthening the local food system and supporting the local economy.

The Jeffrey P. Smith Farm Camp Scholarship endeavors to connect young people with local agriculture and nature by supplementing the cost of sending children to local farm camps, in hopes of nurturing the next generation of local farmers and food supporters.

As demand for local food continues to grow, so too have the opportunities for America’s farmers to market fresh food directly to the consumer. According to statistics recently released by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), farmers markets and farm stands account for roughly $2 billion of the $3 billion that Americans spend annually on farm-direct products. This revenue, in turn, supports the livelihoods of more than 165,000 mostly small and mid-sized farms and ranches.

“Farmers markets play a vital role not just in generating real income for farmers, but in forming a healthy, prosperous food systems,” says Jen Cheek, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “By providing the opportunity for farmers to connect directly with consumers, markets serve as education centers. Vendors are teaching customers about agriculture and sharing recipes and new foods with their neighbors. Markets are making people and communities stronger and healthier.“
